چکیده
We consider non-negative solutions on the half-line of the thin film equation ht + (hhxxx)x = 0, which arises in lubrication models for thin viscous films, spreading droplets and Hele–Shaw cells. We present a discussion of the boundary conditions at x = 0 on the basis of formal and modelling arguments when x = 0 is an edge over which fluid can drain. We apply this discussion to define some similarity solutions of the first and the second kind. Depending on the boundary conditions, we introduce mass-preserving solutions of the first kind (0 < n < 3), ‘anomalous dipoles’ of the second kind (0 < n < 2, n 6= 1) and a standard dipole solution of the first kind for n = 1. For solutions of the first kind we prove results on existence, uniqueness and asymptotic behaviour, both at x = 0 and at the free boundary. For solutions of the second kind we briefly present some qualitative properties. AMS classification scheme numbers: 35K55, 35K65, 76D08, 34C35

Dipoles and Similarity Solutions of the Thin Lm Equation in the Half-line
We consider non-negative solutions on the half-line of the thin lm equation ht+(h n hxxx)x = 0, which arises in lubrication models for thin viscous lms, spreading droplets and Hele-Shaw cells. We present a discussion of the boundary conditions at x = 0 on the basis of formal and modelling arguments when x = 0 is an edge over which uid can drain. We apply this discussion to deene some similarity...
متن کاملElzaki transform method for finding solutions to two-dimensional elasticity problems in polar coordinates formulated using Airy stress functions
In this paper, the Elzaki transform method is used for solving two-dimensional (2D) elasticity problems in plane polar coordinates. Airy stress function was used to express the stress compatibility equation as a biharmonic equation. Elzaki transform was applied with respect to the radial coordinate to a modified form of the stress compatibility equation, and the biharmonic equation simplified t...
متن کاملA nonlinear second order field equation – similarity solutions and relation to a Bellmann-type equation - Applications to Maxwellian Molecules
In this paper Lie’s formalism is applied to deduce classes of solutions of a nonlinear partial differential equation (nPDE) of second order with quadratic nonlinearity. The equation has the meaning of a field equation appearing in the formulation of kinetic models. Similarity solutions and transformations are given in a most general form derived to the first time in terms of reciprocal Jacobian...
متن کاملSelf-similar solutions for a fractional thin film equation governing hydraulic fractures
In this paper, self-similar solutions for a fractional thin film equation governing hydraulic fractures are constructed. One of the boundary conditions, which accounts for the energy required to break the rock, involves the toughness coefficient K ≥ 0. Mathematically, this condition plays the same role as the contact angle condition in the thin film equation. We consider two situations: The zer...
متن کاملSimilarity solutions for van der Waals rupture of a thin film on a solid substrate
Rupture of a thin viscous film on a solid substrate under a balance of destabilizing van der Waals pressure and stabilizing capillary pressure is shown to possess a countably infinite number of similarity solutions in each of which the horizontal lengthscale decreases like (tR2t) 2/5 and the film thickness decreases like (tR2t) , where tR2t is the time remaining before rupture. Only the self-si...
